During World War II, Captain Martin was involved with the operational use of seamines from submarines, carrier aircraft, and U. S. Army B-29 bombers, receiving the Bronze Star for work with the latter. He served at the Naval Ammunition Depot in Oahu 1942-43 and as mine warfare officer on the staff of Commander Mine Force Pacific 1944-45. He worked for the Naval Ordnance Laboratory 1947- 1974, including service during the Korean War developing mine countermeasures as a civilian member of the Mine and Mine Countermeasures Unit based in Japan.
