Professor Sturdy, the author of “The Establishment of the Naval Academy,” had an especial interest in that phase of the history of the U. S. Navy as both his grandfather, Surgeon John A. Lockwood, and great uncle, Professor Henry H. Lockwood, were members of the first faculty of the Naval School when it was opened in 1845.
Professor Sturdy was educated at St. John’s College, Annapolis, and at Johns Hopkins University. He taught at the Naval Academy beginning in 1916, in the Department of English, History, and Government.
