For a number of years, Proceedings carried his monthly column “Firing on the Up Roll.” In the days of sail, accuracy demanded that warships fire their cannons on the up roll. This was one of the few practical lessons he learned at the Naval Academy, which he applied as a swift boat skipper in Vietnam in using the fantail-mounted 81-mm mortar for both direct and indirect gunfire support.
