Graduated from Bates College in 1927, Mr. Laidlaw is the editor of a biography of ex-President Herbert Hoover and author of numerous articles. This article, his first contribution to the Proceedings, is derived from research performed in 1943-45 under Dr. Alfred C. Redfield of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. From 1946 to 1949 he taught at Mohawk and Sampson Colleges, associated colleges of upper New York, and was chairman of creative writing there from 1947 to their closing in 1949.
