Captain Earle graduated from the Naval Academy in 1914 and received the degree of Master of Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and from Norwich University, Vermont. During the First World War he was Repair Superintendent at the Boston Navy Yard, and since then served continuously in Government and private yards in connection with the construction and repair of naval vessels. He was the first Commanding Officer of the U. S. Naval Drydocks, Terminal Island, California, when he reported on February 25, 1945.
