A naval Academy graduate in the Class of 1927, Captain Virden saw sea duty in the Atlantic, Pacific, Asiatic, and Sixth Fleets. He graduated from Postgraduate School in 1937 and has done shore duty in Evanston, New Orleans, Washington, and Newport. Upon completion of a tour as ComDesRon 18, he entered the Naval War College and is now completing his second year on the Staff of that institution. This is his first article in the Proceedings.
