Lieutenant F. Carl Schumacher, U.S. Navy Reserve (Retired), a 51-year member of the U.S. Naval Institute, left the Navy in 1969. In 1973 he was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star with combat V, and a Navy Commendation medal. He also has a Purple Heart and POW medal. He coauthored Bridge of No Return (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 1971) about his experience in North Korea.
