Lieutenant Huan attended the French Naval Academy and graduated in 1943. During World War II he served in L’Éveille and the battleship Richelieu with the eastern fleet. In 1945 he was with the Naval Infantry in Indochina. Later he attended anti-submarine school and served in the submarines Bourn, Blaison, and Millé, subsequently becoming commanding officer of the submarine Sultane.
