A graduate of the Naval Academy in 1921, Rear Admiral Brown commanded the escort carrier Kalinin Bay and the carrier Hornet in World War II, and also served as Chief of Staff to Commander Fast Carrier Task Force, and in the Joint and Combined Chiefs of Staff Organization in Washington. He participated in operations in the Marshalls and Marianas, Palau, Leyte Gulf, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. He has just concluded a tour of duty as Chief of Staff at the Naval War College. Rear Admiral Brown won Honorable mention in last year’s Naval Institute Prize Essay Contest with his essay entitled "The Principles of War."
