Lieutenant Murrell enlisted in the U. S. Navy in April 1945 and served as an enlisted man for 11 years. During the Korean conflict, he served aboard USS Tortuga (LSD-26) and USS Chevalier (DDR- 805). Following his commissioning in August 1956, he was Gunnery Officer aboard USS Braine for two years, and aboard USS Edson for a year. He was Executive Officer of USS Implicit (MS-455) from November 1959 until July 1961, when he assumed his present duties as Commanding Officer of USS Koka (ATA-185).
