Alan Payne, the son of a distinguished British naval constructor, was a retired civilian naval architect who served most of World War II in the Admiralty on the staff of the Director of Naval Construction. He later served with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve at the Singapore Naval Base and was the cofounder of the Naval Historical Society of Australia and editor of its quarterly journal until his death in October 1980.
