How to Add Your Memoir

HOW IT WORKS

Once you are completely satisfied with your memoir, simply follow the steps below to upload, confirm you have read and agree to the terms of the Memoir License and Collection Agreement, and your memoir will become part of U.S. Naval Institute Memoir Collection following an expedited editorial review within ninety days.

STEP 1

If you are self-publishing the work, create your memoir exactly as you wish to see it added to the Collection, using any reputable online, self-publishing company you may choose. Works never before self-published also are welcome, but must be in a digital format (PDF, Word document, TXT file, or ePub).

STEP 2

Agree to terms. By clicking below, you agree that in order to have your Memoir included in the USNI Memoir Collection, you represent and warrant to USNI that: (i) your Memoir is factual and accurate to the best of your recollection; (ii) your Memoir will not infringe any copyright or other proprietary right of any third party; (iii) your Memoir will not breach any intellectual property right, obligation of confidentiality, trade secret right, or similar agreement with or obligation to any other individual or entity; (iv) your Memoir does not contain any material that is scandalous, libelous, obscene, an invasion of privacy, or otherwise unlawful; (v) your Memoir is wholly original with you and reflects your best recollection of the events described therein; (vi) your Memoir does not personally attack any individual, living or deceased; (vii) your Memoir does not speak on any subject with malicious intent; and (viii) your Memoir does not contain any classified material or material that otherwise may not lawfully be included. You understand and acknowledge that USNI will not make an independent investigation of the representations and warranties set forth above, and will rely entirely upon your representations, warranties and due diligence.

I have read and agree to these terms.

Next, Read the Memoir License and Collection Agreement. (This will open a new window. When you have read the Agreement, you may close that tab and return to this page to complete the process.)

STEP 3

After you confirm your information, a member of the U.S. Naval Institute staff will email you with follow-up instructions. In advance, we ask that you compose a 300 to 500 word description of your Memoir, which will be used to assist with the search functions in the system. You will then send your completed Memoir and 500 word description back, via email, in one of the approved digital formats.

STEP 4

Support Our Cause. Collecting memoirs from those who served in our naval community is a mission-driven initiative for the U.S. Naval Institute. Because we are a private nonprofit educational organization and there are some expenses involved in curating, online maintenance, and access, we ask that those who submit material to the collection consider a contribution to help offset the costs of sustaining a permanent archive. If you are unable to contribute, your memoir nonetheless is a valued addition to the historical record, and will be welcomed into the collection.

For those submitting a memoir, or those who like this initiative, we hope you will consider a tax-deductible gift in support of the Memoir Collection.

Using the buttons below, please select from the following suggested donation options and then click "Begin":

  • $195 for memoirs over 10,000 words.
  • $95 for memoirs under 10,000 words.
  • $1,000 to become a Leadership Circle donor and submit your memoir.
  • Other for custom dollar amount.
  • I am interested in learning more about creating a bequest to sustain the Memoir Collection in perpetuity.
  • If you do not wish to make a donation at this time, select this option to continue the process.

When you are ready to proceed, click the appropriate "Begin" button below, and follow the checkout steps.
