Paul Stillwell—Naval Historian
The Naval Institute has been influenced by many individuals since 1873. For the past 50 years, few have had a greater impact than Paul Stillwell. After serving as managing editor of Proceedings and editor-in-chief of Naval History, Paul went on to head our oral history program, maintaining his association with that program for 37 years. Under his guidance, the oral history collection expanded and became a repository of invaluable primary source material for naval historians. Along the way, through the publication of 12 books, Paul grew to be recognized among the foremost naval historians of the 20th and 21st centuries. We have all benefited from his contributions to the Institute and the naval history community. We congratulate and thank Paul for his hard work, dedication, and professionalism during these past 50 years.
