Conferences And Events

The next event in the Maritime Security Dialogue series (sponsored by HII) will take place on Thursday, 14 November, with Vice Chief of Naval Operations Admiral James Kilby at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C.

Join us on Wednesday, 11 December, at the International Spy Museum for Defense Forum Washington, now in its 18th year. This year’s conference will address the important and timely topic of “Building and Sustaining the Naval Force Structure the Nation Needs.”

Registration is now open for WEST 2025. The 35th annual premier Sea Services event will take place at the San Diego Convention Center 28–30 January. The theme is “The Future Is Now: Are We Advancing Operational Capabilities That Pace the Threat?” We have an impressive lineup of speakers, including Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Lisa Franchetti. Naval Institute members get special pricing—and an even deeper discount if you register by the early bird deadline of 15 December.

Registration and more information about all these events can be found at usni.org/events.

Delivering Destruction Book

Recent Marine Corps–centric publications from the Naval Institute Press include Chris Hemler’s Delivering Destruction. This book examines triphibious warfare—the coordination of land, sea, and air forces—during the World War II battles for Tarawa and Iwo Jima. In describing the development of fire-coordination teams and tactics in the central Pacific, Hemler underlines the importance of wartime adaptation and battlefield coordination and the primacy of the human element in naval combat. Ultimately, the ability to mount tremendous, synchronized firepower at the beachhead—a capability established through three years of grueling wartime transformation—allowed the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps to seize any fortified Japanese island of their choice by 1945. The book also reminds us that despite advancing technology and the expanding domains of warfare, combat remains a deeply human, interactive endeavor.
