Author Event: Lessons in Heroism with Former Prisoner of War Porter Halyburton

book cover

On 17 October 1965, then-Lieutenant (junior grade) Porter Halyburton and Lieutenant Commander Stan Olmstead, U.S. Navy, catapulted off the deck of the USS Independence (CV-62) bound for a target north of Hanoi. Before they arrived on station, their F-4 Phantom was hit by antiaircraft fire. Olmstead died in the cockpit. Halyburton ejected safely but was captured when he hit the ground. His 76th combat mission became his first day as a POW. He was held in the Hanoi Hilton for 7 years, 3 months, and 28 days. His recent book from the Naval Institute Press, Reflections on Captivity, shares stories and insights from his time as a prisoner.

On Thursday, 23 March, at 1030, 50 years after returning home, Halyburton will take the stage of the Jack C. Taylor Conference Center with Taylor Kiland, coauthor of Lessons from the Hanoi Hilton, to discuss the Vietnam War POW experience. We invite you to register for the event at www.usni.org/events/lessons-heroism. Guests may attend in person or via live stream.

To order a copy of Reflections on Captivity, go to www.usni.org/press/books/reflections-captivity. Lessons from the Hanoi Hilton is available at www.usni.org/press/books/lessons-hanoi-hilton.

U.S. Naval Power in the 21st Century: A New Strategy for Facing the Chinese and Russian Threat

By Brent Droste Sadler

“Brent Sadler’s timely and compelling contribution to maritime strategy and broader strategic thinking is refreshing. He convincingly blends military, economic, and technical insight in addressing the strategic challenges of our time. U.S. Naval Power in the 21st Century stands apart as a thoughtful and convincing call for relevant and renewed American naval power and the imperative of naval statecraft in ensuring American prosperity and global influence.”

—Admiral Gary Roughead, U.S. Navy (Retired), former Chief of Naval Operations

Warfighter Lecture Series

Following the success of last year’s Warfighter Series—the Naval Institute’s professional development initiative for U.S. Naval Academy midshipmen—we are well underway with the 2023 events. So far this year, we have hosted three of the six planned presentations by practitioners from the fleet. These lunchtime events are held on “Warrior Wednesdays” and feature Navy and Marine Corps experts discussing their warfare specialties—Marine Corps, Surface Warfare, and Naval Special Warfare so far this year—and getting midshipmen excited about the military career options available to them. Generously sponsored by Navy Federal Credit Union for the second year, the Warfighter Series fulfills a strategic objective of the Institute, “Advance Naval Professionals and Their Profession,” while taking advantage of the world-class facilities of the Jack C. Taylor Conference Center.
