As the USS Blackfin (SS-322) transits the Sulu Sea in the Philippines while surfaced, the officer of the deck (left) takes a bearing with a pelorus to determine the ship’s position. The diesel-powered Blackfin depended on electricity for submerged propulsion and needed to surface periodically to charge her storage batteries.
