Naval Institute Gunfighter Professional Development Presentations For Midshipmen
The second objective in the Naval Institute’s 2019–2023 Strategic Plan is: Advance Naval Professionals and their Profession. In line with that objective, the Naval Institute hosted 400 Naval Academy midshipmen in the Lockheed-Martin Auditorium of the Jack C. Taylor Conference Center on 22 October 2021. We played the opening scenes of the 1986 Hollywood blockbuster Top Gun (which sounds fantastic in the auditorium’s “surround sound”), followed by a presentation on the naval aviation career path by Commander Graham Scarbro, U.S. Navy—an F/A-18 Super Hornet WSO, TOPGUN graduate, and Proceedings 2019 Author of the Year. The presentation, format, and venue were all a hit! This was the “proof of concept” of our Gunfighter series, which will continue in the second semester with presentations on the Marine Corps, Submarine Service, Surface Warfare, and Special Warfare. The Gunfighter Series is just one way we are using our new conference center to further our mission.
Defense Forum Washington
The U.S. Naval Institute will host its annual Defense Forum Washington on 8 December at the Spy Museum in Washington, D.C. The half-day event will gather senior Department of Defense officials, Members of Congress, and civilian leaders to share perspectives and discuss the theme “Setting Conditions for American Sea Power to Meet Strategic Goals.” This event is made possible with support from Leonardo DRS. Visit www.defenseforumwashington.com for full details and register to attend.
Year-End Giving
Please consider including the Naval Institute in your year-end giving plans. Depending on your situation, this might be an advantageous time to consider a leadership gift to the Naval Institute Foundation or a donation of appreciated stock. There is uncertainty about how tax policies will change in the coming year, but current laws such as the CARES Act and the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act remain in effect at least through the end of 2021.
