Thank You, Coast Guard Members!
I have always been impressed by how much the U.S. Coast Guard, the smallest of our nation’s Sea Services, does every day. With 11 statutory missions—spanning from search-and-rescue to drug interdiction to port and waterway security—our national and economic security depends on Coast Guardsmen. The Naval Institute’s open forum, conferences and events, news coverage, and professional books are here to support Coast Guard professionals in their careers. If you have a Coast Guard friend, relative, or shipmate who is not yet a member of the Naval Institute, consider giving them the gift of membership or encouraging them to join. This month, we are offering 15 percent off our membership price of $65 for print plus digital or $39 digital-only memberships. To take advantage of this offer, go to www.usni.org/join and use the code “CG15.”
Naval Institute Press Books
First published in 1952, The Coast Guardsman’s Manual, 11th Edition, brings readers into the second decade of the 21st century. This book describes the modern Coast Guard and its equipment, missions, organization, and history. For almost 60 years, The Coast Guardsman’s Manual has been the “go-to” reference for professional development of this Sea Service.

Honoring J. D. Power, III
J. D. Power III, whose influential name and company are synonymous with quality, was a former Coast Guard officer who joined the Naval Institute in 2010. Several months before his death in January 2021, the Power family generously signed on to sponsor the Coast Guard flagpole that graces the entrance to the Jack C. Taylor Conference Center. We are saddened by Dave Power’s passing, but honored that his good name will forever be part of the Naval Institute’s heritage.
