The Naval Institute is grateful for the generosity of all our amazing donors who have supported the ongoing Power to Inform, Convene, and Inspire Campaign. Our deepest thanks to the following individuals whose participation thus far in 2020 distinguishes them as members of the Alfred Thayer Mahan Society (for cash donations of at least $25,000 within the calendar year), the Stephen B. Luce Society (for contributions of $10,000 to $24,999), The 1873 Society (for contributions of $5,000 to $9,999), and The Leadership Circle (for contributions of $1,000 to $4,999). Special thanks to the growing number of supporters making their contributions through monthly sustaining gifts.

Advantageous Year-end Giving

A gift to the Naval Institute Foundation of appreciated stock you have held for more than one year can be more beneficial to you than making a gift of cash—and is one of several great ways you can help strengthen the Naval Institute. Subject to certain limitations (check with your tax advisor), you can take a charitable deduction for the stock’s fair market value on the day you give it away. You also will avoid capital gains taxes on the increase in value over time, which you might have paid had you sold the stock and then made a cash donation.

Should you choose to make a donation by transferring shares of stock—thank you! Please contact Sue Sweeney at (410) 295-1054 or at [email protected] for details on transferring to the Foundation’s Merrill Lynch account.

If you are age 72 or older, IRS rules require you to take required minimum distributions (RMDs) each year from your tax-deferred retirement accounts. A gift to the Naval Institute Foundation directly from your retirement account can count toward your RMD for the year, but it is not included in your adjusted gross income, whether you itemize or take the standard deduction. (The CARES Act temporarily waives RMDs for all types of retirement plans [including IRAs, 401(k)s, 403(b)s, 457(b)s, and inherited IRA plans] for calendar year 2020.)

A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) is a transfer of funds from your IRA, payable directly to a qualified charity, such as the Naval Institute Foundation. Amounts distributed as a QCD can be counted toward satisfying your RMD for the year, up to $100,000—and the QCD is excluded from your taxable income. (This is not the case with a regular withdrawal from an IRA, even if you use the money to make a charitable contribution later.  The withdrawn funds would be counted as taxable income even if you later offset that income with the charitable contribution deduction.)

Another option for support: The Naval Institute Foundation is fully eligible to receive grants from donor-advised funds.

Of course, every person’s tax situation is different. The information above is general in nature and is not a substitute for advice from a tax professional. You should consult your tax advisor with respect to your particular situation.

Build Your Legacy a Brick—and a Chair—at a Time

Construction on the Jack C. Taylor Conference Center continues apace, and members still may become personally involved by sponsoring an auditorium chair and/or a brick on the rooftop donor-recognition wall.
