Much attention has been focused on the state of surface warfare officer (SWO) professional training and qualification in the past year. Well-intentioned efforts are underway to increase the quality and quantity of SWO training, adjust the SWO career path, and prioritize watchstanding proficiency through recurring assessments. In addition to these laudable initiatives, the surface navy should also leverage research in behavioral economics and decision-making to enhance watchkeeping performance.
