Predictions about the future of warfare are usually of dubious value. As then-Secretary of Defense Robert Gates put it in a 2011 speech: “When it comes to predicting the nature and location of our next military engagements, since Vietnam, our record has been perfect. We have never once gotten it right.” Nonetheless, to prepare for the next fight we have to make educated guesses about the direction of war. For more than a decade, one educated guess that seems to be holding up is the theory of distributed operations (DO).
