Every military base worth its salt has a movie theater. Before every single show, the national anthem is played. I was in the military for 27 years, and between 0800 “Colors,” at which time the flag is raised and the anthem played, and every imaginable sort of military ceremony, I’ve heard and stood at attention for the national anthem many times. Yet I admit that in the past dozen years I have grown lazy in my public presentation with regard to the symbols of the institution. I’m standing, mind you, but I’m being sloppy.
