Since its inception, the Department of Defense (DoD) Joint Information Environment (JIE) has faced many hurdles. However, the department has moved forward with physical implementation, and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS) and the service chiefs have recognized JIE as an operational imperative—worthy of department-wide effort and substantial resource investment. JIE development is necessary to secure the Department’s cyber infrastructure across the DoD Information Network (DODIN). A key technical characteristic of the JIE—the Single Security Architecture (SSA)—is designed to collapse DoD’s security boundaries, reduce its external attack surface, improve containment and maneuver in reaction to cyber-attack, and standardize security controls across DoD networks.
