“The power to inform, convene, and inspire” campaign
I’m proud to announce that the Naval Institute has launched our first-ever comprehensive fundraising campaign to celebrate nearly a century and a half of supporting those who dare to read, think, speak, and write, and to launch a new era of accomplishment. “The Power to Inform, Convene, and Inspire” campaign will sustain our commitment to truth, nonpartisanship, and open dialogue, create a physical flagship to facilitate deeper connections, and catalyze efforts to safeguard and share the history of the Sea Services. For more information on how you can get involved, turn to page 19 and visit campaign.usni.org.

Searching for the perfect gift this holiday season? Give the gift of education—membership in the U.S. Naval Institute. Members advance the naval profession through the intellectual debate that occurs here on the pages of Proceedings, in Proceedings Today, on our blogs, and at our events. Membership keeps you well informed, provides writing opportunities, and gives you a professional advantage. Share this advantage with your team and give the gift of membership. Receive a special holiday discount of $10 when you enter “HOLIDAY10” at checkout. A life member recently wrote, “Proceedings represents the Institute in a nutshell: well-thought-out ideas from a wide group of writers: admirals to staff sergeants to civilians. You are made to think.” Staff Sergeant James Grabarits, USMC. As our mission says, “read, think, speak, and write.” Education makes the best gift of all!
Finally, as we head into the holiday season, I want to wish all our members a very happy and safe time with family and friends. Thanks to your support, 2018 has been a great year for the Naval Institute, and we look forward to another terrific year in 2019. I hope to see you at a Naval Institute event or hear from you in the New Year, and don’t forget that Naval Institute Press books make a great gift for anyone with an interest in the Sea Services.
