Using current technology, all available and enabled positioning sources, whether GPS or an inertial platform, are displayed in real time. All of the data can be overlaid with accurate tidal stream and current calculations, along with other needed information.
The U.S. Navy is asking warships and submarines to do more than ever before, frequently operating in-shore in poorly surveyed areas, with significant density of shipping and an ever-present asymmetric threat. The work pace of teams on watch has become increasingly intense. Much debate has taken place over the past year on how to improve the career structure and major shore-based training courses for officers and enlisted personnel. However, much remains to fully adopt a culture that properly understands digital navigation. One change that should be made is simply to take digital seriously and move away from paper entirely. This will markedly increase the safety envelope of operating under way in any warfare environment.
