The Michael Monsoor (DDG-1001), the second of the three 16,000-ton guided-missile destroyers of the Zumwalt (DDG-1000) class, completed acceptance trials in early February—the last major step toward delivery to the Navy last month. The USS Zumwalt was commissioned in October 2016. The third ship, Lyndon B. Johnson (DDG-1002), still is being built at General Dynamics Bath Iron Works.
The Zumwalt class represents many breakthroughs for the Navy, most conspicuously for hull and deckhouse design, but also for sensors, weapons, and computing infrastructure.
On the systems side, the most decisive step forward is the introduction of an integrated electric drive (IED) power and propulsion architecture for a class of surface combatants.
