Australia released its latest defense white paper and long-range investment plan in February 2016. The document confirms plans to replace the six Collins-class submarines with a force of 12 “regionally superior” non-nuclear-powered boats. Construction on the new class, based on the French Barracuda design, is to begin in Australia around 2023, with the first units expected to enter service in the early 2030s. The Collins submarines are to begin receiving sonar enhancements and other improvements in the 2020s to keep them fully capable until their replacements arrive.
