Navy Lieutenant Dale S. “Chubby” Lyons shows his artificial leg, which he finally convinced his superior officers would not interfere with his performance as a naval aviator. He proved his point by making 13 successful take-offs from and traps on board the USS Shangri-La (CV-38) in one day. Lyons lost his left leg below the knee from wounds received during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
