‘No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path.’
Buddha (c. 563–483 BC)
No one captured the essence of the Great White Fleet’s majesty better than Swedish-American artist Henry Reuterdahl. A lieutenant commander in the United States Naval Reserve Force, Reuterdahl was selected by President Theodore Roosevelt to accompany the fleet on its 1907–1909 round-the-world voyage. The original of his “Straits of Magellan” is on display in the U.S. Naval Academy Museum.
