‘Destiny is no matter of chance. It is a matter of choice.
It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved.’
— William Jennings Bryan (1860–1925)
Considered one of the country’s foremost watercolorists, Navy combat artist Mitchell Jamieson depicted the crowded deck of an invasion-bound transport in his work titled LST In Channel Convoy. The artist, a two-time Guggenheim Fellow, previously participated in the invasion of Sicily and later painted the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay. Nearly two decades later he volunteered as a civilian artist for the Army in Vietnam.
