As you can see from the page attached to the cover of this month’s issue, we are highlighting two important topics for members: voting and membership. I urge you to exercise your member voting privilege. Both the Board of Directors and the Editorial Board guide critically important aspects of our Naval Institute. Your vote makes a difference.
The year 2012 promises to be an exciting one for the Institute. We will roll out a series of new initiatives including more timely online content, an upgraded website, expanded eBook offerings, a new marketing approach that embraces “member get a member,” expanded member meetings, more effective outreach to those on active duty, and greater opportunities for member participation. Near-term, we have a terrific lineup for the WEST conference that we co-sponsor with AFCEA. I hope to see many of you there in San Diego 24-26 January.
There has never been a better or more important time to be a member of the Institute. Big decisions affecting the future of the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine will be made this coming year. Our independent professional forum will be at the center of the debate.
The ability to reach the right pool of potential members is not what it used to be. Conflict-of-interest rules and strict guidelines that govern privacy of personal information limit the channels by which we can invite prospects to become members. The days when names and addresses of newly commissioned officers and rosters were shared freely are long gone.
Reaching potential new members requires a different approach and, we believe, you know the right people to invite into the membership of the Naval Institute! You interact with people who may share your interest in the important mission of the Institute. You understand how our forum strengthens the naval profession. You understand the importance of informing others outside the profession about the critical contribution the Sea Services make to our nation’s defense and economic well-being.
We have set up a special link that makes it easy for new members to join. I respectfully request your support for this important effort. Invite a friend or a colleague to sign up at www.usni.org/refer. If they prefer, they can always call us at 1-800-233-8764.
As we start 2012, let us remember those who are serving in the far corners of the Earth. We owe particular thanks to all the Sailors, Marines, Coast Guardsmen, and others who stand the watch on our behalf. I wish you all the very best in the New Year!
