In November, Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Mike Stevens distributed “Zeroing in on Excellence,” his guidance for the CPO Mess. He made many excellent points applicable at all levels of every service, and they deserve a wide audience. The best aspect of MCPON Stevens’ thoughts on refocusing the Mess is that it does not amount to a program. Instead, “Zeroing in on Excellence” is a reminder of chief petty officers’ most important responsibilities and where their efforts are needed.
MCPON Stevens’ primary and supporting letters explaining “Zeroing in on Excellence” make it clear he has not dreamed up yet another program requiring countless hours to implement and document. Feedback from the CPO Mess regarding areas where it could deliver a positive and immediate impact revealed a desire for “Excellence in the things we have rather than continuously inventing new solutions.” It is appropriate the Mess identified this and important that MCPON Stevens listened.
