A 14 September Washington Times article by Frank J. Gaffney Jr. discussed efforts by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates that threaten the Marine Corps’ existence. Could the Marine Corps cease to exist with the eventual end to combat operations in Afghanistan and Mr. Gates’ challenges to Navy-Marine amphibious-assault capabilities?
Let’s hope not. The Marine Corps is one of this country’s richest military traditions. Moreover, it is one of the nation’s most capable and flexible military forces.
Total military end-strength is a concern, and apparently Mr. Gates hopes to find savings to build the Army, but the first place he should look is the Air Force, not the Marines. The Air Force is well-known for having over-specialized technicians, resulting in more people than requirements dictate.
