In today's world of terrorist plots and fierce natural disasters, this is not the time to sit back on our scientific laurels. Thinking innovation and developing the technologies needed to deal with these incidents are hallmarks of the Department of Homeland Security's Science and Technology Directorate (DHS S&T). In fact, it is difficult to think of any of the department's many responsibilities that could not be enhanced with smarter, faster, and sharper technologies.
One of the department's four major support components, the Science and Technology Directorate is responsible for providing the cutting-edge research and development to put those technologies into the hands of the department's front-line personnel. As Secretary Janet Napolitano noted, better science helps the department understand emerging threats and provides ways to identify, counter, and mitigate them.
