Our Guiding Lights
When the Naval Institute Press decided to publish Guiding Lights, an inspirational tribute to the military heroes who are the namesakes of Naval Academy buildings and monuments, we had modest expectations. The concept was excellent, but we anticipated the book would appeal to a relatively small market of Annapolis grads Niche books are usually expensive because production costs must be recouped in a fairly small print run. Enter retired Navy Captain Randell Prothro (father of the book's author, Academy professor Nancy Arbuthnot), who envisioned the enduring potential of Guiding Lights to motivate future generations of young men and women who will serve our nation in uniform.
When Doc Prothro learned that the Naval Institute Foundation has a program to raise book subventions
tax-deductible gifts to help underwrite the production costs of worthy educational projects-he knew this was the key to making Guiding Lights affordable and thus more widely available. In concert with the Foundation he launched a successful grass-roots effort that has so far attracted nearly 100 supporters. Our thanks to the following who have championed Guiding Lights:Joe A.
