USNI: 135 Years Strong
Among the half-million images in the Naval Institute's photo archives—one of the largest private collections in the world and maintained through generous gifts of support raised by the Foundation—are hundreds that document our association from its earliest days. On the occasion of the Institute's 135th anniversary, take a moment to enjoy our bounty!
The first meeting of the Naval Institute was called to order by Naval Academy Superintendent Rear Admiral John L. Worden at 1945 on Thursday, 9 October 1873, in a second-floor lecture room of the Department of Physics and Chemistry (center foreground). |
By 1962, the Naval Institute's small staff was headquartered in Preble Hall, sharing the building with the Naval Academy's museum and the athletic association. |
Naval Institute president (and Chief of Naval Operations) Admiral Elmo Zumwalt led the celebration of the Institute's 100th anniversary in October 1973, flanked by vice president (and USNA Superintendent) Vice Admiral William Mack (left) and the Institute board. |
Fledgling novelist Tom Clancy shares the stage with his Naval Institute Press editor Constance Buchanan as he is named USNI book author of the year in April 1985 for The Hunt for Red October. |
Edward L. Beach, Jr., mans the ship's wheel and diving stick of his former submarine, the USS Triton (SSN-586), at the dedication of Beach Hall in April 1999. The Institute's current headquarters is named for Captain Beach, the author of the naval classic Run Silent, Run Deep, and his father, who served as the Institute's chief executive early in the 20th Century. |
