Get On Board with Alternative Fuels
By Kevin Billings, Rear Admiral David R. Oliver Jr., U.S. Navy (Retired),and George Alan Hutchinson
The Air Force has taken the first steps, but stronger joint and congressional action is needed.
The call to wean the nation off petroleum has been consistent. As we develop and implement alternative fuels, Navy - Air Force interoperability holds the key to success. Aside from the Navy's primary ship platforms, we also use large numbers of aircraft: fighters, attack, cargo, reconnaissance, and electronic warfare. Both the Navy and Air Force use the C-130, and recently the two services signed a joint memorandum to streamline acquisition of the Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicle. Working together to test and certify alternative aviation fuels will add tremendous value to our joint capabilities.
