Clarence E. Leggett
In a rambling handwritten four-page will notarized two years before he died, Clarence Eugene "Gene" Leggett of Kins-ton, North Carolina, dished out editorial comments to his friends and family as he directed distribution of the modest investment properties and other property he'd gathered throughout his lifetime. The lone organization he included in his estate plan was the Naval Institute, to which he belonged for a decade.
Now, five years after Gene Leggett's death in August 2002, his bequest has come to fruition through the monumental efforts of his executor, Jefferson Ghent of Portsmouth, Virginia, who had to catalog, sort, clean, and sell several properties. The Institute ultimately received more than $128,000, which has been invested in an endowment to help ensure the continuation of educational programs.
