Call for Support for Admiral Robert Dunn's Oral History
The Naval Institute seeks contributions to underwrite Vice Admiral Robert F. Dunn's oral history. During nearly 20 hours of interviews, Bob Dunn covered his life from his boyhood in Chicago to present day, discussing the many individuals and events encountered throughout his distinguished career. Before retiring in 1989, he served as Assistant Chief of Naval Operations (Air Warfare).
When Dunn, an Eagle Scout, arrived at the Naval Academy in 1947, he was the first member of his family to attend college. After graduation, he joined the USS Nicholas (DDE-449) during Korean War operations, eventually transferring to Pensacola for flight training. He flew the Douglas AD Skyraider with various attack squadrons in the mid- and late-1950s. After duty as a flight instructor in the early 1960s, Bob Dunn served as flag lieutenant to the colorful Rear Admiral Joseph "Jumping Joe" Clifton, Commander Carrier Division Seven. During the Vietnam War, first as the executive officer and then the skipper of Attack Squadron 146, he flew the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk on more than 200 strike missions over North Vietnam.
His commands included Carrier Air Wing Seven, Carrier Group Eight, the amphibious command ship USS Mount Whitney (LCC-20), and the aircraft carrier Saratoga (CV-60). He also served as Commander, Naval Military Personnel Command, Chief of Naval Reserve, and Commander Naval Air Force, Atlantic Fleet.
Donations are needed to underwrite the costs of editing, proofreading, footnoting, indexing, and binding Admiral Dunn's oral history. Tax-deductible contributions of all sizes are appreciated. Those who donate $1,000 or more to the Dunn history will be acknowledged in the bound volume, in Proceedings, and at the Institute's Web site. Gifts can be mailed to the Naval Institute Foundation at 291 Wood Road, Annapolis, MD 21402, or made on-line at www.usni.org. For more information, contact Sue Sweeney at (410) 295-1054 or at [email protected].
