There are lots of reports of DoD's plans to shrink our Navy further. The same week saw the devastation of the earthquake and tsunami in the Indian Ocean region. Who was there first? The Navy and the Marine Corps were.
There is no other organization in the world that can get there, remain on station, and provide a number of support functions for relief efforts. A tear came to my eye as I heard how our brave men and women stripped the helicopters to maximize the load of relief supplies they could carry. What struck me the most was that, despite what the world may think of us, our flag was the first to fly in that region, on the uniforms of our service personnel. We have been lending aid in the form of naval assets since the birth of our Navy, such as in the wars against the Barbary states. We cannot shirk our duty to the world. The United States is blessed with abundance and we have a duty to help those most in need to better themselves and to share our ideals of liberty, freedom, and justice.
