Commodore Club Inducts New Members
We are proud to welcome Naval Institute member Kevin P. Shaeffer of Fredericksburg, Virginia, to the Commodore Club. He will be inducted at a 1 October reception just before this month's Warfare Exposition and Symposium in Virginia Beach, Virginia. As a lieutenant serving in the Navy Command Center at the Pentagon on 11 September, Kevin was critically burned. Medically retired, he received the Purple Heart from CNO Admiral Vern Clark. Through painful ongoing treatments and rehabilitation, his inspiring enthusiasm for our country and the Navy has never wavered. Fellow Naval Institute member and Naval Academy alumnus Greg Salyards of Atlantic City sponsored Kevin's entry into the Commodore Club after seeing a PBS interview with him early this year. Greg hopes his gift, coupled with Kevin's heroism, will set an example that others will want to follow.
On a picture-postcard day on 8 September, Michael A. Howland of Winchester, Massachusetts, joined the Commodore Club in a ceremony on board the nation's oldest serving warship, the USS Constitution, in Boston. With spars and rigging towering overhead, Naval Institute publisher Tom Marfiak was piped on board Old Ironsides. Tom presented the Commodore Club pennant, crest, and framed certificate to Mr. Howland. More than 50 guests attended the ceremony, moderated by P. X. O'Neill, friend of Mr. Howland and longtime Naval Institute Foundation Trustee and Commodore. For information about the Commodore Club and other leadership gift opportunities, please contact Kirk McAlexander, Executive Director of the Naval Institute Foundation, at (410) 295-1056, or at kmcalexander@ usni.org.
Chief of Naval Operations Delivers "Sea Power 21"
CNO Admiral Vern Clark will convey to the nation his vision for the U.S. Navy in the 21st Century through a series of articles in Proceedings and participation in Naval Institute's seminars. The strategy series, launched in this issue with the CNO's "Sea Power 21," will continue periodically through 2003 with supporting articles to develop the thinking behind "Sea Power 21." In addition, Admiral Clark and members of his senior staff will address participants at the Naval Institute's Seventh Annual Warfare Exposition and Symposium in Virginia Beach on 2-3 October and at future Naval Institute symposia.
Publication of "Sea Power 21" in Proceedings is made possible through the Signature Club, the leadership gift society that since 11 September 2001 has been funding additional pages in the magazine—allowing more voices to be heard on more subjects during this time of war and national crisis.
