Historians agree the Battle of Midway marked the turning point in the fight against a determined, war-hardened Japanese fleet. Despite the U.S. success, some mission failures resulted in loss of aircraft and lives. For the majority of the men assigned to the Hornet (CV-8) Air Group, Midway was their baptism of fire. For Commander Stanhope Ring, commander of the Hornet Air Group and senior pilot for the task force, this also was his first combat action.
