Are some key Coast Guard decision makers too tired to know they are beyond their own personal limits of endurance? When personnel operate in their personal "red zones" for fatigue, what are the consequences for life-and-death search-and-rescue services? A group of senior operations center (OpCen) watch standers in one of the Coast Guard's busiest operational shore commands were having their sleep and activity indices monitored when their unit was called to respond to the 1999 EgyptAir Flight 990 tragedy. The results suggest changes that must be made to improve critical Coast Guard services to both recreational and commercial mariners.
