"Airborne Takes the Beach"
(See R. Hahn, pp. 5658, December 2000 Proceedings)
Colonel Gregory J. Baur, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve/American Airlines captain, and Michael W. Touma, Ship Introduction Project Officer, Military Sealift Command—The demise of the amphibious assault has been predicted annually since Gallipoli in 1915. Commander Hahn's contention that amphibious operations will be replaced by airborne assault is a stretch. Commander Hahn predicts that by 2012, with capable C-17s and modified C-5s, we'll just precision airdrop "M1A1 Abrams tanks, 155-mm howitzers . . . and within three hours an entire division could be in position for movement on the objective," making the amphibious assault too risky and expensive in comparison to an airborne operation.
