It wasn't a night like in The Perfect Storm, but it was the kind of night that makes an officer-in-charge drive to the station to follow the operations first hand. Chief Petty Officer Lucey was about to make the decisions her 22 years in the Coast Guard had groomed her to make, especially when lives are in the balance. Just four minutes after the search-and-rescue alarm at Station Westport Harbor sounded, Chief Lucey's best coxswain and crew were under way into 11-foot seas on board their brand-new 47-- foot motor life boat (MLB). Their customers this evening were three people whose 32-foot trawler had sunk right out from under them.
