Today's military environment demands that active-duty and reserve personnel be as physically fit as possible. This attitude is gaining acceptance not only in the military but among civilians as well. Despite a world of supersized fast food orders and increased use of computer games, more members of the armed forces are taking a holistic approach to fitness.
One area that has received considerable publicity in the past two years is the increased use of dietary supplements, including everything from vitamins and minerals to herbs and amino acids. Marketing campaigns are employing icons from baseball great Mark McGwire to world-class bodybuilders as they bombard military members in an effort to shape the way they look at supplementation. Beside the outside stimulus, within each service military members are being forced to improve their physical capability, as evidenced in the revised Navy Physical Readiness Test Requirements.
