Sidebar: The Forgotten P-3
As the Navy searches for a new Multi- mission Aircraft to replace many land-based aircraft in the current inventory (EP-3, left), it might facilitate the transition to that aircraft by creating a maritime patrol and reconnaissance organization now.
For the next two years, the Navy will be conducting a study into the feasibility of replacing the P-3, EP-3, E-6, and C-130 aircraft with a Multimission Aircraft (MMA). These land-based (non-carrier capable) aircraft perform a variety of missions, including antisubmarine warfare (ASW), antisurface warfare (ASUW), signals intelligence, airborne command post, and utility/transport. Finding a single aircraft that can meet the requirements of all of these existing platforms will be a challenge. If successful, it could be a very positive move for the Navy—and possibly other services as well.
