A father and son attempting to cross the North Pacific Ocean en route to Vancouver, British Columbia, from New Zealand encountered a devastating storm with 50-foot waves and high winds. Their 27-foot sailboat was severely battered and rolled over, seriously injuring the father. The sailboat began to sink. The son struggled to get the life raft over the side, but it capsized, dumping almost all of their supplies into the turbulent waters. With the injured father finally in the raft, the two sailors were adrift in the frigid waters of the North Pacific.
