"The Captain's Down!"
(See D. Taylor, pp. 2-6, August 1997 Proceedings)
Midshipman 1/C William J. Berryman, U.S. Naval Reserve—Chief Taylor's firsthand account of Commander Tamayo's passing brought back memories of the limited time I spent under his command. In June and July 1996, my midshipman first class cruise was on board the USS Fife (DDG-991). During those five weeks, I learned more about the Surface Navy than in all of my previous summer cruises combined. Commander Tamayo and his crew were among the most professional and dedicated I have yet encountered in my brief naval experience.
Upon reporting to the Fife last summer, I met Commander Tamayo when I went with the wardroom to a luau. One of the first things he asked me was, "What's your first name?" It was a given, to feel comfortable around the captain.
