The Sea Combat Commander Concept, one of the most far-reaching initiatives under the U.S. Navy's Integrated Battle Organization, is revolutionizing the way we conduct maritime warfare. Dubbed "AZ" in the new, streamlined battle organization, this multimission warfighter, typically the destroyer squadron commander embarked in the task group's aircraft carrier, now manages the transition from subsurface to surface warfare, including a number of (usually) routine tasks such as screen commander, maritime interception commander, and mine countermeasures commander. In a Navy of diminishing resources, coordinating and single-hatting these responsibilities may offer the best chance to do more with less.
